Al Quartemont talks with the “Eco-Mom”, Kimberly Danek Pinkson, about some tips for energy saving and “green” changes around your home.

As the founder of EcoMom and the EcoMom Alliance, longtime social entrepreneur Kimberly Danek Pinkson is a sought after keynote speaker, media guest and green lifestyle consultant. Her background in sustainability began at an early age, having grown up with a Hungarian born mother and a father who works with indigenous shamans and medicine people. Kimberly’s work has always been imbued with a sense of global interconnection. She has also always been a visionary that believes anything is possible with the right combination of hard work, perseverance and faith. She has proven this so on many occasions.
Kimberly summitted the back side of Yosemite Valley’s famed Half Dome at the tender age of six and went on her first Native American based Vision Quest at the age of thirteen. After a ballet career was prematurely ended due to an injury, she fought back through several years of rehabilitation to study dance and psychology, graduating with honors from UCLA and the University of Hawaii. Defying all the odds, she then went on to a professional dance career working with artists such as Hype Williams, Will Smith and STORM, and traveled the world teaching, and performing with companies like Nike’s Culture Shock and Rosenthal and Co. During the course of her dance career, Kimberly performed in countless videos and industrials and co-founded two youth outreach dance companies - and became a freelance writer on the side. After retiring from dance, she became a certified Pilates rehabilitation trainer and worked with Olympic athletes while continuing to grow her work in the LOHAS (Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability) sector with event production, writing and teaching.
In her work with the EcoMom Alliance, Kimberly is able to bring together her wide range of experience across a myriad of cultures in a myriad of sectors. She is one of those rare individuals who is as at ease among a group of scientists discussing climate change as she is among a group of mothers talking pre-schools, or a Board of Directors pondering economics and ecology.
Kimberly’s story of founding the EcoMom Alliance is one of courage, hope and lots of nights with little sleep. As a single mother, it was quite a leap to start a non-profit organization but she felt compelled and inspired. Her vision has paid off. The organization now has EcoMoms from Mumbai to Minneapolis and is helping to reduce the climate crisis and create a sustainable future leveraging the power of women with locally based, globally relevant programs such as the EcoMom Challenge and One Night Off.
Kimberly is a regular contributor to websites and parenting magazines such as iVillage. Her “Ask EcoMom” column is a popular feature among The Cradle readers. She has recently appeared on The Today Show, 20/20, ABC Evening News, CBS Evening News, KGO’s View from the Bay and a host of regional television programs. Kimberly is equally comfortable in front of or behind the camera and just enjoys bringing together people and ideas who would not otherwise meet. In addition to the myriad mom’s groups and special events Kimberly speaks at on a regular basis, 2008 also has her speaking at the World Women’s Forum in Seoul Korea, the Marketing to Moms Conference in Toronto, Canada, the Bioneers Conference in San Rafael, CA and the National Organization of Women’s Conference in Los Angeles, CA. She is inspired every day by her six-year-old son Corbin and by the amazing people she meets
