PINEVILLE, La. – The Louisiana College football team secured their first winning season since reviving the program in 2000. The Wildcats triumphed over fellow ASC member Texas Lutheran, 29-7. The win puts LC at 6-3 on the season with only McMurry, in Abilene next Saturday, remaining on the schedule. LC got a total team effort, rolling up 466 yards of offense while holding the Bulldogs to just 251 yards.
The Wildcats seemed to be on their way to an easy win, taking a 15-0 lead into halftime. LC scored their first touchdown with a little trickery. After TLU (4-5, 3-4), turned the ball over on a fumble at their own five yard line, Wildcat quarterback Derek Lewis found defensive end Jarrel Price, who was an eligible receiver on the play, in the corner of the endzone for a five-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was missed, so LC had to settle for a 6-0 lead. LC’s next two scores came in the second quarter. The first was a John Michiels 35 yard field goal with 11:56 remaining in the half. The second td came on another trick play as Derek Lewis, who lined up as a receiver on the play, got the ball on a double reverse and found Zach Morris for a 31 yard td strike.
In the second half, LC came out sluggish, shooting themselves in the foot with penalties and turnovers. TLU took advantage of LC’s slow play and cut the lead to 15-7 on a Roderick Batson three yard run with 5:01 remaining the the third quarter. While the LC offense was struggling, the Wildcat defense stood tall after the score and kept the game at 15-7.
Late in the fourth quarter, the LC offense got back on track, scoring two touchdowns in the game’s last five minutes. The first one came with exactly five minutes left when Lewis, who finished 28-of-44 with three touchdowns and two interceptions, found Jordan Rideaux for a 53 yard touchdown pass. Rideaux led all receivers with 155 yards on seven catches.
LC’s last score, which sealed the win, came on yet another trick play when Rideaux hit Taylor Huffman, who had seven catches for 96 yards, for a 21 yard touchdown pass.
Defensively, LC caused four Bulldog turnovers and sacked TLU quarterback Joel Waldon four times. Cornerback Kendale Rayford was responsible for one of those turnovers, intercepting a Waldon pass in the first half. Rayford’s interception gave him 13 for his career, which set a new LC career record. David Batson led LC defensively, collecting eight tackles, 2.5 of which were for a loss, one sack, and one fumble recovery. Defensive end Stephen Jackson also added to his ASC leading forced fumble total, causing one forced fumble.
