Team Notes
Hardin-Simmons: The Cowboys have gotten off to a 2-0 start, beating two very good teams in Wisconsin-La Crosse (at La Crosse – 24-23) and 2004 DIII National Champion, Linfield (29-22, last week at HSU)…With those wins, HSU moved back into the top 25 (24th) in one of the major polls (d3football.com)…In both games, HSU trailed going in the fourth quarter but pulled out a win…Last year HSU ranked dead last in total defense, but this year, HSU has hired co-defensive coordinators and is very much improved on that side of the ball…HSU has the highest winning percentage since 1990 of any college football team (all divisions) in the state of Texas…Head Coach Jimmie Keeling (73-years old) currently ranks 10th nationally among active Division III coaches and is sixth in winning percentage (.768) among active Division III coaches.

Louisiana College: The Wildcats are 2-0 to start the season for the first time since the 2003 season when the Wildcats beat Belhaven and Sul Ross to start the season…The Wildcats have never started 3-0 since the revival of football in 2000…The 87 yards that the LC defense held Rhodes to was the lowest total for an LC defense in the modern era (since 2000)…Currently the LC defense is much improved over the last several seasons, ranking in the top three in the ASC in both scoring defense (2nd – 9.5 ppg) and total defense (3rd – 226.5 ypg)…LC leads the ASC in kickoff return average (26.5 ypr)…The Wildcat defense leads the ASC in interceptions with six…The LC offensive line has given up seven sacks, which is more than any other team in the ASC…LC is also the most penalized team in the ASC with 20 penalties for 241 yards…Wide Receiver Taylor Huffman ranks fourth in the ASC in receptions per game (6.5)…Cornberback Kendale Rayford leads the ASC in both interceptions (3) and passes defended per game (4.5); One more interception by Rayford will tie him for the school record of 12, held by Howard Brown and Terry Bolton…Also, Rayford was named the ASC Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts against Rhodes.

ABILENE, Texas – Louisiana College’s fourth quarter rally came up 21-yards short as Wildcat quarterback Ben McLaughlin’s last pass attempt fell incomplete as time expired. LC racked up 554 yards of total offense but turned the ball over 4 times which resulted in 21 Hardin-Simmons points, giving the 20th ranked Cowboys a 41-34 victory. LC receiver Taylor Huffman had a career game, hauling in a single-game school record, 14 passes for 166 yards. McLaughlin threw for 443 yards and three touchdowns.
“I’m really proud of the way our guys didn’t give up and played the entire game,” LC head coach Dennis Dunn said. “Of course the turnovers hurt us, but we could’ve easily rolled over when they had the big lead, but we didn’t and we had a shot at the end to tie it up. I think this shows we are on the right track,” added Dunn.
The Wildcat comeback started with 3:39 remaining in the third quarter when, with LC trailing 34-13, McLaughlin scored on a one-yard run, cutting the HSU lead to 34-20. HSU (1-2, 1-0) tacked on another touchdown with 6:18 remaining in the game, pushing their lead to a seemingly safe 21 point margin at 41-20. LC kicked it into high gear and scored a touchdown on a McLaughlin to Justin Johnson, 42-yard pass, cutting the lead to 41-28.
After a failed onside kick attempt, LC cornerback Keith Haydel intercepted a Jordy Bernhard pass, giving LC the ball back with 4:16 left in the contest. LC marched 56-yards in 1:50, scoring another touchdown on a McLaughlin 16-yard pass to Justin Johnson, cutting HSU’s lead to only seven points at 41-34 Johnson hauled in six passes for 134 yards with three touchdowns on the day.
After another failed onside kick attempt, the LC defense stood tall, forcing HSU to punt, giving LC (1-2, 1-1) the ball back on their own 20-yard line with 1:47 remaining in the game. McLaughlin, who finished 30-of-45 for 443 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions led LC down to HSU’s 12 yard line with 20 seconds left an no timeouts, but on a third-and-four play, McLaughlin was sacked on the 21-yard line by HSU’s Eric Daniels and Rich Carlisle. Having to hurry to get a play off, McLaughlin fired a desperation pass that was batted down in the endzone as time expired.
Also having a solid game on the ground was senior Bobby Rose, who rushed for 80 yards with a touchdown on nine carries. Defensively, LC was led by cornerback Kendale Rayford, who had seven tackles.
Hardin-Simmons was led by quarterback Jordan Feaster, who passed for 263 yards on 21-of-34 passing with three touchdowns and no interceptions. HSU tailback Quinton Jones rushed for 118 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries.
