Try going to school and not paying fees. Parents are nickle and dimed for all sorts of things - and some are asking what are they paying taxes for? Where is the money going?  Michelle Ebarb wants answers. She doesn’t understand why the tax dollars she pays aren’t helping her child attend “free” public school.

Principal of Tioga High, Kim Bennett, says the fees are necessary for vocational classes such as Autobody, Welding, and Home Economics. She also says the school is willing to work with each family to set up payment plans.

“There are agencies the school works with… the community reaches out to lend a helping hand,” says Bennett.

The fees aren’t tied into the student’s cirriculum or grades at all, however they do stay with each student until graduation--students must have all of the fees paid to participate in the ceremony.

Principal Bennett says the school uses these fees for books, and learning tools for the children--although she does understand the pain...she was hit with a $65 fee herself from her daughter who also attends the high school

So while public school may not be as free as you’d hope, the school board says the fees you do pay are going toward learning tools to be used in the classroom.

Each individual high school determines the student fees. if you need help paying them, then you can call your local school’s office.

I have a child that goes to tioga and there are fees on required classes also.  He also took auto shop and there were no jumpers in fact most of what they did was play ping pong. And this was after the new auto shop was built.  Even after taxes and fees he was required to bring paper towels and other supplies.

My child goes to Tioga also I can understand fees for Art, Autobody, Home Economics, etc. But I can’t understand Math, English, Science and Social Studies what is up with that? These are regular classes not specialized classes. I have 2 children the fees alone for them were over $100. Not to mention school shirts and all of the supplies you have to buy, other than your normal stuff. For example zip lock bags, clorox wipes, hand sanitizer. This is just crazy anymore there is no “free education”.
