Weather takes toll on La vegetables, pasture

More than a third of Louisiana’s vegetable crop is in poor or very poor condition, as soil moisture levels remain a concern in the state.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture rated 39 percent of the crop in rough condition, with 60 percent fair or good and 1 percent excellent. The agency also rated 39 percent of the state’s pasture land in poor or very poor condition for the week that ended Sunday.
Soil moisture has been an ongoing worry for farmers this year.
The department rated half the state in short or very short supply, and the U.S. Drought Monitor showed abnormally dry or drought conditions over nearly all the state last week, with severe drought emerging across central and north-central Louisiana.
