The quality of soybeans, rice and sugarcane left in Louisiana fields deteriorated last week due to standing water left by Hurricane Ike. That’s according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The department, in its weekly crop report, also said that some cotton producers were shredding fields instead of harvesting them because of the damage wrought by Ike and Hurricane Gustav this month. Sixty percent of the state’s cotton crop was rated very poor or poor as of Sunday; 44 percent of the state’s soybeans and 40 percent of its sugarcane rated the same. Soil moisture was rated 70 percent adequate, 28 percent surplus and 2 percent short.
The department says high winds and heavy rains damaged most of the state’s vegetable crop, and also hit citrus farmers hard.
