If the predictions hold true - Vernon Parish could be hit with nearly 70 mile an hour winds and up to 8 inches of rain.

A lot of folks say it’s a forecast that reminds them of Hurricane Rita 3 years ago, and this time they didn’t have to be convinced to get ready for the storm.

Vernon Parish Sheriff Sam Craft says the area’s Office of Emergency Preparedness is more than well prepared for Ike, partly from lessons learned from Rita and Gustav.  He says the sheriff’s office is ready to help in any situation.

Sheriff Craft also added that shelters have been set up at all Vernon Parish Schools, however, if you live in Leesville - you must go to either Leesville High or Vernon Middle School.  He says these locations will have security, but are not manned by the Red Cross, so there won’t be any food or drinks provided...just the comfort of a safe place to whether the storm.

For more information, you can call the Vernon Parish O.E.P. at (337) 238-0815.
