NATCHITOCHES—Freshmen Demetria White and Britany Kinlaw were the pacesetters Monday night for Northwestern State in a 57-50 homecourt win over Centenary, as White scored 15 points and Kinlaw snagged a season-high 16 rebounds.
The non-conference women’s basketball game lifted Northwestern to a 3-2 record while Centenary dipped to 1-5. Both teams shot just 33 percent from the field, but NSU outrebounded Centenary 46-35 and forced 13 steals. The Lady Demons had an 18-0 advantage in fast break points.
“It’s a win, and you don’t take those for granted. But they don’t come much uglier than this,” said Lady Demon head coach Jennifer Graf. “We really struggled offensively, even at the free throw line, and we made 25 turnovers against a team that wasn’t playing aggressive defense. We turned it over against air.
“But after Centenary made a nice run to make it a tight game, we made the plays and the shots to keep the upper hand, and that’s the bottom line,” she said. “It’s a young team but one that is already showing us it will compete.”
Northwestern posted a 23-19 halftime lead and got it up to 32-23 with 15:36 left on a layup by White. But Centenary battled back within 40-39 over the next seven minutes, before a run of seven straight points by NSU capped by a 3-pointer from Anna Cate Williams, who was 3-for-4 from distance.
The Ladies closed within 46-43 but a layup by White with 4:15 remaining reopened a 5-point advantage for NSU and Centenary never got closer.
The spread was as large as 10 in the final minute.
Centenary got 19 points, a game-high, by Ashley Jackson and 10 points from Natchitoches Parish product Cierra Bush.
Both teams shot poorly from the free throw line, 22 of 35 for NSU and 13 of 25 by Centenary. The Ladies had 24 turnovers.
Northwestern next plays at Grambling Thursday night. The Lady Demons aren’t home again until a Dec. 17 game against Alcorn State, moved from its original Dec. 13 date.
