MIAMI (AP) - Tim Tebow gave Florida the jolt it needed, and the
Gators toughed out a second BCS title in three years.
Their 24-14 win over No. 2 Oklahoma in a choppy, sloppy affair
tonight made them a national champion. But it did little to quiet
fans of Southern California, Utah and Texas, all of whom already
claimed the top spot.
The high-scoring shootout between Heisman Trophy winners never
materialized.
Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford couldn’t score from in close and Tebow
threw two interceptions, as many as he had all season.

PINEVILLE, La. - The LC women’s basketball team’s poor second half cost the Lady Wildcats Thursday night at H.O. West Fieldhouse.  The Lady Wildcats shot only 13.5 percent in the second half and lost a 10-point halftime lead in losing to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, 47-43.  LC returns to action Saturday, hosting Concordia-Texas Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

After a very sluggish start by both teams, LC closed out the first half on an 18-7 run to take a 28-18 halftime lead.  In the second half, UMHB chipped away and eventually took a 42-35 lead with 5:00 left in the game.  With 0:49 remaining, Roslyn Wilmer hit a jumper, pulling the Lady Wildcats (7-4, 3-4) within one-point at 44-43.  On UMHB’s next possession, Jenny Black nailed a three point basket securing the ASC win for the Lady Cru.

LC was led in scoring by Krystle Hunter, who scored 16 points.

PINEVILLE, La. - The Mary Hardin-Baylor men’s basketball team used a strong rebounding effort and solid shooting to take a 74-53 American Southwest Conference win over Louisiana College Thursday night at H.O. West Fieldhouse.  The Wildcats return to action Saturday, hosting Concordia-Texas at 3:30 p.m.

LC’s Troy Folse scored the game’s first two points, but after that UMHB took control and never looked back.  After Folse’s basket, UMHB ran off eight straight points.  With just over eight minutes remaining in the half, LC did pull to within one point at 19-18, but UMHB was able to pull away again and take a 12-point lead into halftime.  In the second half, LC shot only 22.7 percent, allowing UMHB to pull away and take the 21-point win.

LC’s leading scorer was Josh Johnson, who scored 11 points.  JeLani Mitchell also posted double-digits for the Wildcats, notching 10 points.  UMHB was led by Tilmon Gaddy’s 21 points.  UMHB outrebounded LC, 43-23.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.—Freshman forward LaSondra Barrett erupted for a career-high 27 points and Courtney Jones added a career-high 16 points as the LSU women’s basketball team won its Southeastern Conference opener at Arkansas, 62-42, on Thursday night at Bud Walton Arena.

The Lady Tigers (7-5, 1-0 SEC) won for the sixth time in the past eight games and extended its SEC regular season winning streak to 16 consecutive contests. LSU defeated Arkansas (11-5, 0-1 SEC) for the 13th straight time and by double-digits for the 10th consecutive meeting in a series that has been dominated by the Lady Tigers.

LSU, the defending SEC champions, boasted three true freshmen in the starting lineup and five players who entered Thursday night’s contest without a conference start. What resulted was a team that looked like the five previous squads that advanced to five consecutive Final Fours.

Barrett finished 12-of-18 from the floor and added eight rebounds with two assists and two blocks. Junior guard Allison Hightower chipped in nine points and a season-high five assists. LSU finished with 20 assists for the game and took over in the paint by outscoring Arkansas, 34-16.

Barrett’s 27 points were the most by an LSU player since Seimone Augustus poured in 30 points against Ole Miss on March 3, 2006. The Jackson, Miss., native also matched the former National Freshman of the Year for the most points by a true freshman since Augustus had 27 in her debut at Arizona on Nov. 21, 2002.

LSU outscored the Razorbacks, 37-18, in the second half. Barrett had 16 of her 27 points in the second half and connected for 10 of the Lady Tigers’ first 14 points out of the locker room. Jones gave LSU a double-digit lead, 41-31, on a layup at the 15:00 mark.

Barrett knocked down a pair of free throws and Jones followed with two of her own to extend the advantage to 20 points, 56-36, with 4:53 remaining. Arkansas, the league’s leading three-point shooting team, meanwhile was held to an empty 0-of-11 from beyond the arc in the second period.

LSU’s zone defense held the Razorbacks to 25 percent from the field for the game. The Lady Tigers finished 45.6 percent from the field on 26-of-57 shooting.

LSU erased an eight-point first half deficit. The Razorbacks missed their first six shots but then heated up from three-point range with three consecutive three-pointers, including two from Shanita Arnold. Brittney Richardson’s jumper at the 12:31 mark put the Hogs up 16-8.

LSU came alive and mounted an 8-0 run over the next four minutes to tie the score at 16 apiece. Hightower buried a runner through the lane and Jones drained two layups. Barrett had six of the Lady Tigers’ first eight points and finished with 11 in the first half.

The Lady Tigers return home to play host to Alabama in their SEC opener at 2 p.m. CST Sunday in the Maravich Center.
