The unusual quiet of this year’s Atlantic hurricane season was broken yesterday, with the formation of the season’s first named storms…Ana and Bill. Today, a third tropical storm - named Claudette - is keeping forecasters with a close eye’s watch.
Claudette is packing winds of 50-plus miles per hour, and is already bringing heavy rain and high wind to the panhandle of Florida.
On St. George Island, rain is already causing street flooding and high waves in the Gulf of Mexico. The storm is on course to become the first tropical storm of the season to strike the U.S. mainland.
Claudette is not expected to cause any significant damage, but residents on St. George Island, and all along the panhandle, are boarding up and staying off the beaches - just in case. A tropical storm warning is in effect from the Alabama state line to the Suwannee River, more than three-hundred miles to the east, and all along the Florida panhandle.
