BATON ROUGE- With Hurricane Gustav potentially approaching the Louisiana coast by Monday, the Louisiana State Police would like to remind all Louisiana citizens to prepare for evacuations well ahead of time. As the threat of tropical force winds grows closer, citizens should make their decision to evacuate from low-lying areas well in-advance of mandated evacuations or state implemented contra-flow plans. Being prepared and acting early will ensure all residents who could be affected by the threat of Hurricane Gustav are able to leave low-lying areas quickly and without difficulty.
The Louisiana State Police recommends the follow steps to prepare for safe travel:
· Fill vehicle gas tanks prior to departure
· Check tires and maintain proper air pressure, including the spare
· Check vehicle fluid levels and top them off.
· Equip your vehicle with jumper cables, vehicle jack and lug wrench.
· Bring water and food with you.
· Do not attempt to tow unsafe or unnecessary trailers.
When traveling on state highways, either before or during contra-flow, keep all lanes clear by moving vehicle crashes or stalled vehicles off of the roadway to continue uninterrupted traffic flow. The public is encouraged to call the Louisiana State Police Hotline at 1-800-469-4828 for traffic or evacuation information. Citizens can also dial 511 to receive information on travel advisories or road closures. Hurricane information can be located at http://www.GetAGamePlan.org or at http://www.LSP.org.
