BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The Southern University Board of Supervisors has chosen a top-ranking vice president as the interim president of the Southern system.

By one vote, Kassie Freeman was selected Friday over two nationally prominent Southern Alumni - retired U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Russel Honore and James Joseph, a former U.S. ambassador to South Africa.

Honore led a task force following Hurricane Katrina. Joseph is teaching at Duke University.

Freeman said she was completely surprised by the appointment, which came on a 9-6 vote. Her appointment includes the stipulation that she does not seek the permanent president’s job.
