A man sits behind bars and his young son is in a hospital after police say the man placed the four-year-old in a tub of scalding hot water.
Carey Cortez was booked Wednesday into the city jail on a charge of cruelty to a juvenile. Teachers at Park Vista Elementary School in Opelousas told KLFY-TV in Lafayette that the boy’s father dropped him off and he began screaming almost immediately. Teachers say they approached him to see what was wrong, took off his shoes and found large blisters and deep, red burns.
The boy’s sister, a second-grader at the school, told a teacher that Cortez placed the boy in hot water after he wet the bed. The child, who has second-degree burns to both feet, is recovering at an area hospital.
