HOUMA, La. (AP) - Shrimping will close at 6 a.m. Tuesday in most state waters in eastern Louisiana.

Affected are portions of Zone 1, which runs from South Pass to the Mississippi state line.

Fisheries officials are opting to keep certain waters open to ease the impact of the short spring season on shrimpers.

One of the biggest issues was the proliferation of smaller-than-usual brown shrimp, the type that typically pay off for shrimpers in spring and early summer.

Biologists began finding too many juvenile white shrimp in sample nets about a week ago in waters off Terrebonne and Lafourche, prompting the first season closure so the shrimp can develop to marketable size.
