MONROE, La. (AP) - Ouachita Parish high school teachers say shorter class periods are making it more difficult for them to cover the comprehensive curriculum mandated by the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education.
The periods were shortened to accommodate an extra period each day.
The change was a decision by the school district designed to give students more opportunities to take electives, but some teachers say it has left them covering the same material in far less time than last year.
West Ouachita curriculum coordinator Rebekah Oaks says schools are caught “between a rock and a hard place.” Some teachers fear fewer instructional minutes may mean cutting classroom discussion and special projects for students.
