Shame, part of the Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers, will be shown on Friday, January 9, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. in the Coughlin-Saunders Performing Arts Center.  This film, originally scheduled for September 2008, was rescheduled due to Hurricane Ike.

The Southern Circuit, now in its 23rd year, brings six independently produced films to host cities over the course of eight months, along with the films’ directors and producers, who participate in a “question and answer” session with the audience after the screening of each film.

The director of Shame is Mohammed Naqvi.

Audiences attending the January screening will meet Naqvi, whose internationally acclaimed and award-winning documentary, focuses on the struggles of human rights leader Mukhtaran Mai.

Mai was brutally raped by leaders in her remote Pakistani village, and her struggle for justice has been captured in this beautifully produced and inspiring film, which chronicles her journey from simple peasant woman to becoming a world human rights avatar and an icon for justice.

A trailer for Shame is available on the Arts Council of Central Louisiana’s website at http://www.louisiana-arts.org, along with trailers for each of the films featured in the Southern Circuit tour.

Tickets for the screening are $5 and may be purchased at the box office on the day of the screening, or in advance by calling the Arts Council of Central Louisiana at (318) 443-4718.

The Southern Circuit of Independent Film Makers is presented in Alexandria by the Arts Council of Central Louisiana.

It is a program of the Southern Arts Federation and is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts.  For more information on the series, call (318) 443-4718.
