He’s defeated six opponents in two recent elections but indicted U.S. Rep. William Jefferson has one more battle before he can claim a 10th term, and the Republican Party is putting thousands of dollars into the race to defeat him.

So far, the state and national parties have pledged a combined $84,000 for the campaign of Anh “Joseph” Cao, the Vietnamese attorney and activist from eastern New Orleans, who was unopposed for the Republican nomination. Cao’s campaign also is counting up cash raised from two fund-raisers this week. Cao and Jefferson are running in the New Orleans-based 2nd District. It is mostly black and Democratic but GOP officials say they believe there are many Democrats who will join in voting for Cao, due to the federal corruption charges facing Jefferson.

The election is Dec. 6.
