The 75-year-old cotton brothers bakery building on Bolton Avenue is on it’s way to becoming the new headquarters for the red cross.
News Channel 5’s Joel Massey has more on the building many hope will be the start of rejuvenation in the Bolton Avenue area.
The old Cotton Brothers building has been a bakery and a bus station but after lying dormant for the last 30 years it’s seen better days. But now the Central Louisiana Chapter of the Red Cross owns the building and plans to put their headquarters there. Chapter CEO Leann Murphy says they’ll start the work next month.
Alexandria Historic Preservation Commission Director Melinda Anderson said that she hopes that this renovation will be the start of more preservation in the area.
Anderson said, “On Bolton Avenue there some wonderful buildings there and there’s a neighborhood and community on either side of it that really needs to be rehabilitated some attention given to it. We think its economic development at its finest with historic preservation being behind it.”
