Keep Louisiana Beautiful, the state’s non-profit organization committed to litter reduction, is reminding citizens that on February 17, 2009, all television stations will stop broadcasting on analog airwaves and begin broadcasting digitally.
This means outside antennas and “rabbit ears” will no longer be functional.
The following tips will help consumers prepare for the conversion to digital television:
• Consumers who rely on antennas (including outside antennas and “rabbit ears") to receive broadcast signals on analog TV sets need to obtain separate digital-to-analog set-top converter boxes. These boxes receive digital signals and convert them into analog format. Analog sets connected to such converter boxes will display digital broadcasts.
• Through March 31, 2009, all U.S. households will be eligible to request up to two coupons, worth $40 each, to be used toward the purchase of up to two, digital-to-analog converter boxes. More information can be found at http://www.DTV2009.gov.
• There are recycling programs available for those who choose to discard old analog TVs. Through myGreenElectronics or Earth911, visitors can learn about disposal options and locate recycling programs nearby. Visit http://www.mygreenelectronics.org or http://www.earth911.com for more information.
• Citizens can find out if they are ready for the conversion to digital TV by taking the DTV online quiz at http://www.dtvtransition.org.
“Since most TV manufacturers don’t have recycling programs in place, we want citizens to know that there are options for updating or recycling existing sets,” said KLB Executive Director Leigh Harris.
Keep Louisiana Beautiful is a volunteer based service organization dedicated to a healthy and litter free Louisiana.
Through a network of statewide affiliates, KLB promotes its mission to educate Louisianans on the ecological and economic effects of littering.
