August 9: One Day Breastfeeding Class, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Rapides Health and Lifestyle Center. Intended for women wanting to breastfeed their infants, this class is taught by an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and focuses on advantages, preparation and troubleshooting techniques. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding for your baby. Research shows that learning about breastfeeding prenatally enhances your breastfeeding experience. The support partner/father is welcome to attend. $30 fee (includes lunch), waived if delivering at Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Call 769-3106 to register.

August 11: Look Good, Feel Better, Noon, Rapides Health and Lifestyle Center.  Cancer can rob a woman of her energy, appetite and strength. But it doesn’t have to take away her self-confidence. Look Good … Feel Better is a free program led by a trained volunteer cosmetologist who teaches beauty techniques to female cancer patients in active therapy. In order to provide complimentary cosmetics, advance registration is required. Call Community Education at 769-7150 or 1-800-ACS-2345. Please identify what color makeup kit you will need: light, medium, dark or extra dark.

August 12: Baby Care Basics, 9 a.m.-11 a.m., Rapides Health and Lifestyle Center, 724 Scott St., Alexandria.  Babies don’t come with instructions! Have questions about caring for your newborn? Need to know more about bathing, feeding, sleeping safety, wellness and when to call the doctor? Join us for this two-hour class. It’s free if you deliver your baby at Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Bring your baby with you. Call 769-3106 to register.

August 18: Cancer Support Group, Noon, Rapides Health and Lifestyle Center, 724 Scott St., Alexandria. If you or someone you know has cancer, or you are a caretaker of someone with cancer, please join this group on the third Monday of each month. A light meal will be served. Please pre-register by calling 769-3106.

August 19: Healing Hearts Perinatal Loss Support Group, 7 p.m., Rapides Regional Medical Center, 211 Fourth St., Alexandria. Healing Hearts is a local organization that offers support to parents and others touched by the death of a baby through early pregnancy loss, stillbirth or newborn death. The group meets at 7 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month. Location rotates between area hospitals. August 23: Prepared Childbirth Class (One Day), 9 a.m.-2 p.m., Rapides Health and Lifestyle Center.  This class, taught by a certified childbirth instructor, prepares couples for the actual delivery. Topics include stages of labor and delivery, when to go to the hospital, pain management, assisted delivery, Cesarean birth as well as a tour of Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital. A light lunch will be provided. There is a $30 fee if not delivering at Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Call 769-3106 to register.

August 25: Relaxation and Labor, 6:30 p.m.- 8:30 p.m., Rapides Health and Lifestyle Center.  Taught by a certified childbirth instructor, this class will be an in-depth opportunity to practice breathing and relaxation techniques and other comfort measures for labor and delivery. The support partner/father is encouraged to attend. Bring pillows to class. There is a $15 fee. (Waived if delivering at Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital.) Call 769-3106 to register.

August 27: Muscular Dystrophy Support Group, 6 p.m., Gallery Room, Medical Terrace at Rapides Regional Medical Center, 211 Fourth St., Alexandria. Meetings include guest speakers and access to staff from the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Call (800) 644-9730.
