It could be as early as October that teachers and workers of the Rapides School System will receive the money the school board says is owed to them from the police jury.
Police Jury President Richard Billings delivered a $1.1 million dollar check to Superintendent Gary Jones Thursday after the two parties came to an agreement and all the proper documentation was signed.
The issue over the use of a 1-cent sales tax, specifically rebate checks to area businesses, has been a major topic of discussion between the board and police jury for months, but now the two say it’s all water under the bridge.
“We’re very pleased with it. We think it’s the right way to do it and we’re happy that our employees are going to get the money that’s been held in escrow”, said Superintendent Jones.
“I couldn’t have asked for better treatment from the school board. I don’t think that the school board, or the police jury, was trying to get in a controversy with each other. I think that we both was trying to work this thing out to where it would be beneficial to the people of Rapides Parish”, said President Billings.
According to a published report last week, the money will translate into $440 for teachers and $220 for support employees.
