A New York City coalition has scheduled a rally and march to show solidarity for residents displayed by Hurricane Katrina on the third anniversary of the disaster.
The “Call to Action, A Day of Unity” event, set for Friday afternoon in Chinatown, is one of many events across the country marking the anniversary. The Right to the City NYC, one of the organizers, says it also wants to show that the issues affecting many New Orleans residents are not unlike those many low-income New Yorkers face.
The group says New York’s gentrification, high cost of living and lack of public housing are creating hardships for working-class and immigrant families.
