LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - As the school year gets moving in Lafayette, traffic sergeants are on the lookout for overcrowded school buses.

That word comes from Chief Deputy Tim Picard of the City Marshal’s Office.

He says he stopped an overcrowded school bus on Friday and ordered one-third of the children to get off because there were no seats for them.

Picard says buses should only hold about 60 students. But this one, on its way to Lafayette Middle School, held more than 90. He says 31 students were standing in the aisle.

He says several people had complained about the overcrowded bus.

Picard says he notified the school and gave the bus driver a warning.

He says Lafayette Parish police also have received complaints.
