OCPR Levee Officials to begin Levee Assessments Today

Office of Coastal Protection and Restoration levee engineers are scheduled to begin assessing post-Gustav levee conditions Tuesday as weather permits. Rain bands and winds from Hurricane Gustav continue to move onshore over southeast Louisiana.

State and local levee district officials will continue to direct assets to the areas most in need.

Orleans Levee District and State Official Help Plaquemines Parish Close Levee Break on East Bank near Braithewaite

State and Orleans Levee District officials delivered the necessary resources to the east bank of Plaquemines Parish Monday night to close a levee gap near the Caernarvon Siphon near the towns of White Ditch and Scarsdale.

Plaquemines officials reported street flooding from the levee breech but no flooding of homes was reported. Further assessments of both eastern and western portions of Plaquemines Parish are expected today.

Preliminary Reports from South Lafourche Levee District Show No Levee Overtopping or Breeches

Windell Curole, the Director of the South Lafourche Levee District reported no breeches or overtopping of the South Lafourche Levee District protecting the towns of Golden Meadow, Larose and Galli! ano.

Further inspections will be conducted today to begin to determine the current condition of the levee system.

Inspections of South Terrebonne to begin Today

State and federal officials are scheduled to fly by helicopter over the areas of southern Terrebonne Parish most affected by the winds and storm surge from Gustav.

Flooding was reported in the towns of Montegut, Chauvin, Cocodrie and Dulac. Additional flooding may have taken place. The eye of Hurricane Gustav made landfall Monday morning in Cocodrie, the southernmost town in Terrebonne Parish.

Overtopping of parish flood control levees in South Terrebonne was anticipated by parish and state levee officials prior to Gustav making landfall.
