Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen didn’t believe that President-elect Barack Obama was on the other end of the line when she answered her phone Wednesday.
Thinking she was the target of a prank caller, she hung up.
A second call ended in a similar fashion.
“I thought it was one of the radio stations in South Florida playing an incredible, elaborate, terrific prank on me,” Ros-Lehtinen said. “They got Fidel Castro to go along. They’ve gotten Hugo Chavez and others to fall for their tricks. I said, ‘Oh, no, I won’t be punked.’”
Ros-Lehtinen finally realized that Obama really was calling after taking another call from friend and fellow member of the House Foreign Affairs committee assuring her that it was in fact the President-elect who she’d just hung up on, twice.
Obama was calling the Ros-Lehtinen, a Republican, to congratulate her on her reelection and tell her that he was looking forward to working with her.
