NATCHITOCHES—Fans attending Saturday evening’s Northwestern State home football game at Turpin Stadium against Cal Poly can contribute to the North Louisiana chapter of the American Red Cross.

A planned collection drive at last weekend’s NSU-Grambling game was cancelled due to Red Cross staff involvement with Hurricane Ike, so volunteers for the North Louisiana chapter of the American Red Cross will be seeking donations at entrances to Turpin Stadium at Saturday¹s game.

The contest between the Demons (2-1) and Mustangs (1-1, ranked 13th in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision) kicks off at 6. It is “Band Day” with bands from many area high schools participating in the halftime show, and it is also “Family Day” for relatives of NSU students.

The collection effort for the Red Cross comes in light of the financial consequences of hurricanes Gustav and Ike.  Eleven North Louisiana parishes benefit from assistance provided by this chapter of the American Red Cross for crises such as the cost of recent hurricane relief efforts.

The Red Cross operates a storm shelter on the Northwestern campus, in the Health and Human Performance gym, whenever storms or disaster situations dictate. The center can accommodate up to 700 evacuees. During the double impact of Katrina and Rita in 2005, Prather Coliseum was also utilized at the peak when some 1,600 evacuees were here.

Members of NSU¹s registered student organizations, including Greek fraternities and sororities, will be part of the volunteer crew soliciting donations on Saturday.

All of the Northwestern athletic teams played active roles in the 2005 hurricane relief on campus. This month, for Hurricane Gustav, members of the Demon basketball team were recreation coordinators for young people in the NSU Red Cross center, leading them in activities at Prather Coliseum.
