As Friday’s third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina approaches, officials in Louisiana and Mississippi are keeping a close eye on Gustav.
The storm could return to hurricane strength as it heads toward the Gulf Coast in the coming days.
Gustav unleashed a torrent in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, killing at least 22 people.
Gustav is expected to get stronger over gulf waters and could threaten landfall Monday, near where Katrina struck three years ago.
Louisiana’s is governor insisting on personal precautions.
“Now’s the time is the time to go to the store, stock up on those batteries and those supplies. Don’t wait ‘til this weekend,” Governor Bobby Jindal warned residents.
There are worries.
Engineers have just found major damage to a huge pump house, and relief services are barely restored.
In Saint Bernard Parish only one of ten destroyed firehouses has reopened and trailers still serve as the makeshift hospital.
Gustav’s first strike could be oil.
Prices are up on fears the storm could batter platforms in the gulf.
Meteorologists say once Gustav’s in the gulf, its target range stretches from Corpus Christi, Texas to Tampa, Florida.
FEMA released a statement Wednesday saying federal agencies are in close communication with states along Gustav’s potential path to review plans, assets and personnel and to respond to any request for assistance.
