There are now cameras keeping an eye on two intersections in Pineville.
The state says they’re to smooth out the traffic flow. But they look a lot like cameras that some towns use to catch red light runners. News Channel 5’s Joel Massey tells us which one it is.
The cameras at the intersection of Highway 28 East and the Pineville Expressway might give the appearance that big brother is watching you. But they’re not traffic cameras to ticket red light runners. The cameras make the timing of the light possible.
David Backstedt is the District 8 traffic engineer for the department of transportation and development. He told me how the cameras work.
Backstedt said, “It’s based on traffic demand so they determine if a vehicle is present in different approaches and when they sense that a vehicle’s there that particular approach is given green time and phasing for that operation.”
Phasing is a term used for the red light green light and arrow combination for movements through an intersection. The cameras replace underground loop wire detectors which had a tendency to break.
“We’ve found it’s more efficient and safer to put up the cameras because whenever the loops break we can still maintain the signal.”
Backstedt said red light cameras are positioned differently and signs are required to be posted telling motorists of the potential for a ticket.
“If it was red light running first off it would be signed and notified to the motorists of the red light running set up there. These cameras have nothing to do with that whatsoever.”
Alexandria and Pineville officials say there are no plans at this time to put up traffic cameras to ticket red light runners.
