The majority of southwestern Louisiana’s rice crop had been harvested before Hurricane Gustav hit the state - but the remainder sustained severe damage. That’s according to the LSU AgCenter.
Rice experts say about 10 to 15 percent of the crop in Louisiana’s rice belt is still in the fields - and was hit by high winds and heavy rainfall that caused the plants to fall over. It’s a different story for rice farmers in northeastern Louisiana. There, only about 20 percent of the crop had been harvested before the remnants of Gustav dropped up to 20 inches of rain.
AgCenter officials say that if water drains off quickly, the rice will be salvageable - but with reduced yield and quality.
