A former Monroe City Schools administrator won $246,000 in a judgment against the school district for wrongful termination.
A jury ruled that the district violated Deborah Mahan’s
due-process rights by failing to conduct tenure hearing when her
employment was terminated.
Mahan sought compensation for inappropriate termination.
The jury initially awarded Mahan $383,000, but reduced the
amount for what it called Mahan’s “failure to mitigate her loss.”
The jury believed Mahan did not do all that she could to
minimize her loss.
In the settlement, Mahan received $120,000 for loss of income,
$75,000 for loss of retirement benefits and $24,000 for mental
anguish, and other awards.
