LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) - A recent eviction turned up a scaly tenant in a house that the landlord said had been vacant for three weeks.

The 2-foot-long ball python is now a temporary resident of the Ward 3 Marshal’s Office, and has been dubbed “Deputy Hsssssss.”

Chief Deputy Marshal Karl Gillard jokes that now some people won’t go to his side of the building any more.

He says a book about snakes, also left in the house, explained how to care for the animal.

Gillard says the former tenant has told him he plans to recover the snake.

In the meantime, says Gillard, he’s stacked all sorts of things on top of the python’s 55-gallon terrarium. That’s because the owner says it has been known to escape.
