A former Vernon Parish 8th grade teacher will be spending five years behind bars for having sex with a student.
Today, 40-year-old, Maurna Thornton was sentenced to 5 years in prison, 5 years probation and a $2,500 fine
In May, Thornton pleaded guilty to 1 Count of Felony Carnal Knowledge of a Juvenile.
Her arrest came after the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office received complaints of inappropriate behavior between Thornton and a 14-year-old student.
During the trial today the judge said Hornbeck had ample opportunity to end the relationship after the student’s mother confronted her.
Thornton also admitted to communicating by text messaging with the student.

It appalls me that you would try to put blame on the boy’s mother. Why should she take the boy’s cell phone away? Maurna was the adult here and the predator. She was confronted by the boy’s mother, but instead of ending the relationship, she changed her own cell phone number to keep the mother off her trail. Yes, she did loose her job, what else did you expect to happen. She knew that this was wrong and what the repercussions would be. Surely she did not think her husband would be OK with her having a sexual relationship with a 14 year old boy. It is very sad that her three children have lost their mom for five years, but Maurna is to blame for that, not the boy, not his parents. Nonetheless, she broke the law and now she must spend some time in jail.

We all make mistakes. This is happening more and more and I think that parents are also to blame. Why are your 14 year old children out and able to even be involved in such a relationship. Also children just aren’t children as long as they should be anymore and that is our fault as well. What happened was wrong, it never should have happened, but the fault does not just lie in Maurna’s hands, it lies in the mothers as well. As far as the texting goes, if the mother was so concerned and wanted it to stop she should have taken it away! She lost her job, her husband, her name was drug through the mud, lost her home but that was not enough, now three children have lost their mama for five years.
