Louisiana is the nation’s least healthy state, according to a new national ranking of states’ overall
health. Louisiana had ranked 49th last year, but fell behind Mississippi in the report released Wednesday by United Health Foundation.

To explain Louisiana’s dismal ranking, the organization pointed to the large percentage of uninsured residents, the large number of children who live in poverty and high rates of infant deaths, premature deaths, preventable hospitalizations and cancer deaths.

The foundation’s report said the healthiest state was Vermont, followed by Hawaii, New Hampshire, Minnesota and Utah. The bottom five were Texas, Tennessee, South Carolina, Mississippi and Louisiana.
