A wing of the Louisiana National Guard leadership that includes about 100 personnel will remain permanently at Camp Beauregard after moving from New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina.

The military said Tuesday it has considered for some time using the camp, a key training facility for the Guard, to house a permanent leadership contingency.

After Katrina destroyed operations at the Guard’s headquarters in Jackson Barracks, about 300 soldiers attached to the leadership core relocated to Beauregard.

“There is a silver lining to every cloud,” Brig. Gen. Stephen C. Dabadie said Tuesday. “We pretty much lost Jackson Barracks, but things that we were planning have moved along more quickly, and we are able to do them now.”

Officials said it made sense to put part of the Guard’s investment in new facilities in Camp Beauregard, located in central Louisiana.

Landreneau said about half of the 300 troops that are leaving are going to Carville, where another branch of the Guard’s leadership is expanding.
