Spotty showers brought relief for some Louisiana farmers and ranchers, and even slowed progress on the state’s rice harvest.

That’s according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The department, in its crop report, said showers last week helped heat-stressed livestock and pasture in parts of the state but that ranchers needed more rain for their hay. Nearly 80 percent of second cuttings were finished, well ahead of the five-year average.

Soil moisture was rated 61 percent short or very short, 34 percent adequate and 5 percent surplus.
