MUSKOGEE, Ok. – Louisiana College opened up their 2008 football season with an exciting, come-from-behind victory, over NAIA member, Bacone College. LC scored 10 fourth quarter points and had two interceptions on BC’s last two drives to pull out a 17-16 win. Overall, the LC defense forced five turnovers, three interceptions and two fumbles, and the LC offense, although sluggish at times, churned out 344 yards.
LC came out hot, scoring a touchdown on their first drive. The score came on a 32-yard pass from Derek Lewis to Jordan Rideaux. After that score, the LC offense went cold, not scoring again until the fourth quarter. Lewis finished the game 24-of-53 for 227 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions.
During the LC scoreless drought, Bacone scored 16 points on three field goals and a 12-yard touchdown pass by quarterback Jose Del Rio. It was a missed 22-yard field goal in the first quarter that haunted Bacone in the end. BC kicker, Brandon Hawley, was wide right on attempt.
Most of the excitement was saved for the fourth quarter. LC entered the quarter, trailing 16-7. Detrick James, who rushed for 50 yards on 16 carries, cut BC’s lead to 16-14 with a two-yard touchdown run with 8:32 remaining in the game. The Wildcats then went ahead on a 34-yard field goal by John Michiels with 3:05 remaining.
While the LC offense was scoring, the LC defense was doing their part to make the comeback happen. After the Michiels field goal, Dominique Taylor had the second of his two interceptions to thwart a BC drive. BC then made a stand of their own, forcing an LC punt, giving the Warriors the ball back with under a minute remaining. Kendale Rayford ended the BC threat, intercepting a Del Rio pass with seven seconds left in regulation.
Defensivley, LC was led in tackles by Lance Stone, who totaled 11 stops. Chaz Kuikahi and David Batson had 10 and eight tackles respectively. The LC defense also registered three sacks. Overall, the Wildcat defense surrendered 360 yards of offense.
