BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Emergency officials say they’re better
prepared than last year for evacuations if a hurricane heads toward
Louisiana’s coast.
Several of Gov. Bobby Jindal’s cabinet members told lawmakers on
Tuesday that they’ve improved their system to get evacuees in buses
and have adequate shelters ready in north and central Louisiana.
Transportation secretary William Ankner said his agency now has
contracts for commercial buses that have satellite tracking
systems, allowing officials to divert them if a destination shelter
is already full.
Kristy Nichols, head of the Department of Social Services, said
her agency has automated the emergency food stamp program that
kicks in once a federal state of emergency is in effect.
Nichols and Ankner spoke to the Legislature’s joint homeland
security committee.
