The debate over whether governor’s office records should be subject to the state open records law is moving to the House floor.
Gov. Bobby Jindal has defeated efforts to fully remove his office’s exemption from open records requirements. As an alternative he’s backing a Senate-passed bill by Sen. Jody Amedee of Gonzales. That bill would make some governor’s office records open. But it keeps secret documents including his schedule and those used as part of his staff’s deliberations on policy.
At issue is whether the bill - up for House debate on Monday - is a “transformational” improvement as Jindal’s top lawyer claims, or a bill that creates more secrecy, as claimed by some newspaper editors and the Public Affairs Research Council.
