There is a new heavyweight player in the high-stakes, high-tech, mobile phone market.
Google, yes Google released its highly anticipated next generation phone Tuesday.
The Internet giant is ringing in the new year with a new smart phone.
“This super phone category is just a great way to access the internet,” said Google Vice President Andy Rubin.
After months of hype, the nexus-one was unveiled Tuesday at the company’s California headquarters.
It adds another dimension to the Google empire that already includes Google search, Google earth, Google maps,
Google news, and Google voice.
“It’s putting those Google applications out there for people to use and drawing more people over to smart phones and
that’s all Google needs to draw the volumes around mobile,” said Internet and New Media Analyst Jim Friedland.
The Nexus-One has a touch screen like apple’s “iPhone” and can run multiple applications simultaneously like the
Motorolla “Droid” - which is powered by the Google Android Operating System.
But unlike those two phones, the Nexus is not limited to a specific cellular network.
“This is their attempt at really changing the game and what changes it is trying to do it, at least initially
without a partner,” said Friedland.
The gee-wiz factor of the Nexus can’t be denied.
“This phone is from a performance perspective looking a lot like your laptop did four or five years,” Rubin said.
Google has also voice enabled every text field in the phone which means you can operate every application with
verbal commands.
Fitting for a phone that everyone seems to be talking about right now.
So you’re probably wondering about the cost of the Nexus One.
It is $529 “unlocked” which means you pick the cell service - though not every carrier is on-line yet or $179 when
you included it with a 2-year coverage plan from T-Mobile.
