Glenmora school-based health center to receive $20,000 grant as part of Angel Award honor to volunteer

The school-based health clinic at Glenmora High School will receive a $20,000 grant on Monday, Nov. 3, when a local volunteer is honored as a 2008 Angel Award winner by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation.
Cherry Seal was one of eight Louisianians honored at a recent banquet in Baton Rouge as the 2008 recipients of the annual Angel Award. Since 1995, the Angel Award program has sought out, recognized and rewarded individuals who do outstanding volunteer work to improve the quality of life for Louisiana’s children.
Blue Cross will present the grant to Seal at 11 a.m. Monday in the auditorium at Glenmora High School, 1414 7th Avenue in Glenmora. Supporters of the organization, Blue Cross employees and students helped by Seal’s work will attend.
Seal is the migrant advocate for Rapides Parish School Board. While her job is to ensure all migrant children are enrolled in school, she goes above and beyond by providing everything else they might need to be productive. She frequently drives them to school and doctor’s appointments and brings them books and toys. Realizing that the kids’ migrant parents needed to learn how to speak, read and write English in order to help their children succeed in school, she began adult English and GED classes, coupled with tutoring for the children in the evenings.
“Cherry is a shining example of what it means to be an Angel for Louisiana’s children,” said Christy Reeves, executive director of the Blue Cross Foundation. “She has made countless personal sacrifices to ensure that these children have the same opportunities as every other child in Rapides Parish. We are proud to honor Cherry as one of this year’s Angels.”
In addition to honoring this year’s eight winners, the Blue Cross Angel Award includes a $20,000 grant to each honoree’s charity. Since 1995, the Angel Award has recognized more than 100 volunteers and awarded more than $800,000 to their designated nonprofit organizations.
Angel Award honorees come from all walks of life and have ranged in age from 17 to 93. What they have in common is an unselfish focus on improving the welfare of children in their communities. Honorees are chosen based on their efforts to enhance a child’s life – physically, mentally, emotionally or spiritually. They are selected each year by a panel of past honorees.
