The University of New Orleans reports an increase in the number of students applying for admission for the fall semester for the second consecutive year.

Andy Benoit, director of admissions, said on Thursday the number of applicants in all categories - freshmen, transfer students, re-entering students and graduate students - has increased. Freshmen applications have increased to 3,648, or 8 percent more than the 3,368 received at this point in 2008. Last year, UNO increased the size of its freshmen class by 23 percent from the previous year, representing the highest increase in the LSU System.

UNO was hit hard by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The campus was flooded and the school closed for months after the storm.
