Somewhat bucking a nationwide trend, Louisiana’s state-licensed casinos saw a 5.7 percent gain in winnings from gamblers in October, as compared with October 2007.
The 13 riverboats won $144.2 million, up from $137.2 million a year ago. The four slot machine casinos at race tracks pulled in another $33.2 million, compared with $29 million in October 2007. Harrah’s New Orleans Casino saw a slight drop from $32.5 million to $30.3 million.
Nationwide, casinos generally have reported big falls in gambling revenue. Nevada casinos have reported nine straight months of declining revenue. Over the past two months, New Jersey casinos have reported drops of 15 percent and 10 percent in revenue. During the hurricane-interrupted month of September, Louisiana casinos won $162.8 million.
