NATCHITOCHES, La. (AP) - Byron Lawrence rushed for 191 yards and
Northwestern State scored the final nine points of the game to
rally for a 36-28 victory over Nicholls State on Saturday night.
Nicholls State (0-3, 0-1 Southland Conference) held a 28-27 lead
entering the fourth quarter but Sterling Endsley scored on a
10-yard run with 14:55 left in the game and Robert Weeks added a
29-yard field with 1:22 remaining to lift Northwestern State (4-2,
1-0).
Nicholls State took a 28-24 lead on Lardarius Webb’s 78-yard
kickoff return with 10:15 remaining in the third but didn’t score
again.
Lawrence had 31 carries, including a long of 51 yards, and
scored on a 1-yard run to give the Demons a 14-6 lead with 1:24
left in the first quarter.
They added to the margin when John Hundley hit Gordon Freeman on
a 1-yard pass for a 21-6 lead with 11:46 left in the second
quarter.
Nicholls State rallied for a 22-21 lead when Isa Hines scored
from 1-yard out with 3:13 left in the second quarter.
Hundley completed 7 of 16 passes for 122 yards and two
touchdowns.
Chris Bunch led Nicholls State with 95 yards on 12 carries.
