Just down the street from the state capitol in Little Rock, investigators are still working on the motive behind a gunman who entered Arkansas Democratic Party Headquarters and opened fire, hitting state party Chairman Bill Gwatney.
“We don’t have any indication on what was exchanged in there. All I know is that he came in to this office and started shooting,” said Lt. Terry Hastings.
Witness Sarah Lee was at work at the flower shop across the street when a party worker came rushing in.
“She was shaking really bad and she said that someone has shot the Chairman,” said Lee.
Gwatney died four hours later.
“His loss is going to be grieved by everyone in this state,” said Mayor Mark Stodola.
Investigators now say moments after the democratic headquarters shooting the gunman threatened a manager at The Arkansas State Baptist Convention Headquarters a few blocks away, complaining about losing his job.
Police chased the suspect in his blue pickup some 30 miles south of Little Rock where he’s said to have opened fire on officers and was, himself, shot in the gun battle with police.
“The subject came out of the vehicle and fired two rounds,” said Sheriff Lance Huey.
The gun he reportedly used was also recovered.
Its shells will now be compared to the three that struck Gwatney, one of Arkansas’ most prominent Democrats.
