The Alexandria City Council met behind closed doors about the financial woes of the Alexander Fulton hotel.
News Channel 5’s Joel Massey has more on the bankruptcy and eviction of the hotel.
City council members and the administration met in executive session to discuss the fate of the Alexander Fulton Hotel. In an unusual move councilman elect Jonathan Goins and Ed Larvadain were invited to the closed door meeting.
The Fulton has been in hot water with the city lately. It began with unpaid bills and possible eviction by the city which owns the property. On Friday the owner of the hotel the NR group filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. The NR group would retain control of the hotel while a payment plan is worked out for its creditors.
The Fulton Hotel is tied into negotiations concerning the sale of the Hotel Bentley. A group called Dudley Ventures out of Arizona wants to reopen both the Bentley and the Fulton.
An eviction hearing was set to take place today but since bankruptcy has been filed the city was not able to proceed. City Attorney Chuck Johnson explained what the next step is.
Johnson said, “We will file a motion to end the stay in bankruptcy because we believe that the lease is terminated it shouldn’t be part of the bankruptcy after we get a ruling we will proceed with the petition to evict in city court.”
Johnson said that there is a possibility of keeping the hotel open on a month to month lease basis.
“Our intention is to keep the hotel open we don’t want the employees out on the street we don’t want to lose tourism business so whatever steps we need to take which of course are in the best interests of the taxpayers and employees at the same time we want to do that.”
The city attorney said that after all the eviction and bankruptcy issues are resolved the city will bring to the council any offers to purchase or manage the Alexander Fulton.
