Alexandria, LA - As the American Red Cross continues response efforts for those impacted by Hurricane Gustav and the subsequent flooding, 363 volunteers worked through the tenth straight day of providing food, water, and shelter to residents of south and central Louisiana displaced by the storm.
The Red Cross opened 42 service sites throughout Central Louisiana, including 32 shelters. Today, Louisianans are temporarily residing in only 2 of the Red Cross shelters.
This afternoon, approximately 13 school busses from St. Charles Parish came to pick up the last people sheltered in the Rapides Parish Coliseum which is now officially closed while volunteers clean the facility.
The Central Louisiana Red Cross is also providing hydration and nourishment at 3 locations:
* Grant Civic Center in Colfax, LA
* Jonesville Recreational Center
* Grace Presbyterian – School Gymnasium
For further sheltering information or to begin, call the local Red Cross chapter at 442-6621 or 211.
The next phase of Red Cross response is running smoothly with Red Cross Disaster Assessment Teams covering all of our 8 ½ parishes (Rapides, Vernon, Grant, LaSalle, Allen-northern portion, Catahoula, Concordia, Winn, and Avoyelles). As the assessment nears completion, the Central Louisiana now prepares for the Individual Client Services/Case Management, which will be announced at the point of activation.
As the Central Louisiana Hurricane Gustav Response goes from one phase to the other, thus far, the Central Louisiana Red Cross Chapter has provided over 18,000 shelter overnight stays and
100,000 meal and snacks. The National Red Cross estimates it will spend between $20-$35 million supporting the Hurricane Gustav Response. With three more storms set to follow Gustav, the Red Cross is relying on the compassion and generosity of the American public now more than ever.
