Life is coursing through your veins and southern mosquitoes know it. They can’t live without your blood and neither can area patients needing blood transfusions. Blood is good stuff. It saves lives.
The facts are simple. It takes 30 minutes or less to save up to three lives. The donation process is safe and simple. Just think how many lives you will save if you become a frequent blood donor and gave every 56 days. You see, there is no substitute for human blood and the need never goes away. Blood tested and ready to be transfused only has a shelf life of only 42 days and most of the blood is used by patients prior to the 42 day expiration date. This means the blood supply must be continually replenished to save lives of area patients.
You may think the need for blood will never affect you and your family but it is likely that it will. One out of every five people entering the hospitals will need blood and every two seconds someone needs a blood transfusion to live. So chances are if you don’t already personally understand the need for blood, it is just a matter of time until you do.
Imagine how good it will feel to save lives. You don’t have to be a fireman, policeman or a doctor. All you have to do is donate a little time and a little blood to be a true lifesaving hero. Almost anyone over 17 years old who weighs over 110 pounds can give blood. Donate when you have eaten a good meal, are well hydrated and feel healthy. If you have been deferred before that doesn’t mean you will be again. Know the names of any medications you are taking and bring a picture ID when you come to donate.
