Members of the Louisiana Association for the Blind are taking particular interest in the USS New York - the ship made in Louisiana using material from the World Trade Center buildings.

Members of the organization supplied the more than 10,000 square feet of slip resistant material for the ship. There are 65 compartments on the ship where the safety material was placed. The blind workers converted bulk Safety-Walk material into 1,440 made-to-order pieces, ranging in size from slightly more than three square feet to over 500 square feet. These custom pieces were then applied to surfaces throughout the ship to help improve traction.

The ship built at Avondale shipyards will be commissioned Nov. 7, in New York.
