Wisconsin’s Washington County District Attorney says this is one of the most unusual cases he’s ever seen: A couple from Kewaskum has been charged with selling their own baby.
Missouri native Denise Novotny was arrested in February, charged with child abduction and unauthorized adoption for allegedly buying a baby from the couple in Wisconsin.
“I’ve been a prosecutor for 19 years and I’ve never seen anything close to this,” said Washington County DA Todd Martens.
Now prosecutors are turning their attention to that Wisconsin couple.
A criminal complaint says Novotny paid David and Angela Schmidt of Kewaskum $6,000 for their newborn daughter.
Novotny allegedly had them sign a surrogate birth contract to make it appear legal.
“I don’t know if they thought this was easier or cheaper,” said Martens. “I have no idea.”
People in the Schmidt’s Kewaskum neighborhood have been buzzing about this for months.
“They say she was big one day, and then small the next,” said neighbor Rachel Torrey.
The little girl in question is now in protective custody in Missouri.
DNA tests show that she is the Schmidt’s biological child.
Novotny has not officially adopted her, or filed a birth certificate in Wisconsin.
It’s all left prosecutors shaking their heads.
“What the motivations of the parents are I have no idea,” said Martens. “It’s kind of shocking.”
If convicted the Schmidts could serve three years in prison.
