THIBODAUX, La. (AP) - Animal welfare officials have seized 56 cats from an elderly woman’s trailer in Lafourche Parish.

Lafourche Parish shelter officials would not disclose the woman’s name or address and offered no details about how so many cats came live in the trailer. They did say some of the cats were treated for scabies and malnourishment.

About 10 died or were euthanized following last week’s seizure. The rest will be treated and fed until they are healthy enough to be put up for adoption.

Meanwhile, the Lafourche Parish Council is considering a measure that would increase impound fees from $2 per day to $5 per day.  Council officials are also considering making adopters responsible for spaying and neutering their pets.
